Social mobility and the mature learner: UK and international perspectives
The UALL Annual Seminar focused on current issues and initiatives in the higher education lifelong learning arena and this year’s Seminar addressed two highly important developments: Social Mobility, and the future of European engagement.
‘Social mobility’ has become an increasingly important issue in the lifelong learning world, in recognition of which the Prime Minister set up a Social Mobility Advisory Group organised by Universities UK (UUK). The final report of this group was recently published and Fiona Waye of UUK presented the background to the group and the findings of the newly-published final report. Among the findings Fiona highlighted the recommendation that there should be recognition of 'second chance' higher education for adults.
How the lifelong learning sector conducts relationships with the European Union in a post-Brexit world is of great significance, and Professor John Field, University of Stirling, presented his assessment based on his long experience including his recent visiting professorship at the University of Cologne in his presentation on: Lifelong learning and the European Union: what now?
John's presentation included analysis of the referendum on EU membership and the often conflicting data behind the result. Inevitably he did not make predictions of the effects of the 'leave' vote on the lifelong learning sector.
